Rotary East Mysore, Rotary Ivory Mysore along with Aaheli Foundation had organised a session on sexual abuse at the government school at Marballi. Rotarian Adiba Kazi who spearheads the Aaheli Foundation spoke to girl students about good touch and bad touch.
Children were made aware of their rights and were counselled as to whom to approach if they were targeted by perpetrators. Responding to the open house discussion on the topic, students told the organisers about the odd situation they faced when touched by close relatives.
Hearing their questions, the organisers told them that they must not shy away from reporting such incidents to their parents and teachers so that violators could be punished. They were made aware of their rights in the hour-long session and counselled to fight odds.
Speaking to this newspaper, Rotarian Adiba Kazi said that awareness sessions would be held for the mothers to make them understand that when a child is abused, she undergoes a lot of trauma and it is the responsibility of the families, especially mothers to talk to them and instil confidence. They should not take abuse lightly as it deeply influences the children’s behaviour.
Aaheli Foundation would also organise a series of programmes at schools in and around Mysuru and would even talk to boys about moral and social values and responsibilities, she added.
