By-poll battle gains heat with filing of nominations

The battle just became official in Nanjangud and Gundlupet with candidates from both Congress and BJP filing nominations for the prestigious by-poll elections to the two constituencies.

Kalale Keshavamurthy, the Congress candidate for the Nanjangud constituency, filed his nomination on Monday morning. Along with MLA Vasu, PWD and District In-charge Minister Dr H C Mahadevappa, Marigowda, MLA M K Somshekhar, Keshavamurthy first offered prayers at the Ganapathi temple in the town and then held a procession on the main streets of Nanjangud. Thousands of supporters thronged the streets along with the Congress leaders and cheered vociferously.

Keshavamurthy submitted his nomination papers to the returning officer G Jagadish, at taluk office, Nanjangud. Speaking to media persons, Mahadevappa said that the number of people who came out today to extend their support shows their immense love the people of Nanjangud have for the Congress. “We are sure that all the communities will support our candidate and make us win the election with a huge margin.” Talking about former prime minister H D Devegowda, the minister said that he is a true role model. “The JD(S) did not field any contestant just to keep the communal elements at bay. We are also sure that former minister Benki Mahadevu’s wife will lend her support to the Congress.”

Meanwhile, Geetha Mahadevprasad, the Congress candidate from Gundlupet constituency, also filed her nominations. She was accompanied by MP Druvanarayan and Chamarajnagar In-charge Minister U T Khader.

Tuesday is the last date for filing the nominations, while the last day to withdraw the nominations paper is March 24.

Polling will be held on April 9 and counting of votes will be on April 13. The model code of conduct, which is in effect from the date of announcement of the elections, will be in force till the completion of the election process on April 15.
