Cash theft at Chamundeshwari Temple ‘hundi;’ woman among four held

The Krishnaraja Police have arrested four persons including a woman for stealing cash from the Hundi at Chamundeshwari   Temple, atop the historical Chamundi Hill.

On Monday, the KR Police officers arrested Sachin, 24; Jagadeesh, 31; Vinod, 28 and Anasuya, 45; all residents of Gayathripuram, here, for stealing money from the donation box.

According to police, all the accused were deputed to count the ‘hundi’ money and they siphoned off Rs 66,160 from the hundi.

Canara Bank had been awarded the contract to count the money offered by devotees, once in three months. The money was to be counted in the presence of temple administrators and endowment department officials. On Monday, as many as 60 people, including the suspects, were deputed to count the money.

The officials opened eight boxes to count, but found the behaviour of the suspects suspicious and when they searched their (accused) belongings, the stolen cash was found. –KK, NGB
