The ground reality in primary education in the country was once again exposed recently. The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER)-2016 released by Pradham, a NGO, indicated that in Karnataka around 30% students of class 8 can not even read text book of class 2, 47% students unable to do simple arithmetic and 46% class one students can not recognize single digits or alphabets. The condition is worse in rural areas than in urban localities. It is really a worrying news for teachers, parents, administrators and society at large.Without good foundation in education, students may not fare better in their future. Performance of students from government run schools is on par with students of private schools in many aspects. This emphasizes for a thorough revamp in our primary education system irrespective of its implementation whether in private or government sector. The only positive note of the ASER report is that admissions in government-run schools have increased in some states. Hope government may bring in sea changes in the present educational system!
