Mysore Grahakara Parishat is joining hands with other NGOs and the “Save Kukkarahalli” committee to oppose the decision of the University of Mysore to desilt Kukkarahalli Lake. Desilting the lake during the period of severe drought which has already resulted in a significant reduction in the water level might very well lead to the total drying of the tank due to the seepage of the remaining water. MGP feels that the proposed “development” works at Kukkarahalli tank show little concern for protecting the rich biodiversity in the vicinity of the tank. The idea of converting the lake into a “tourist attraction” lacks vision.
The executive committee of MGP has decided initiate a process to evolve and implement a comprehensive eco-friendly development plan as an alternative with the objective of sustaining the tank for a long time and making it a unique destination for migratory birds and a habitat for varied fauna and flora.
