To commemorate National Sports Day and promote sporting activities in the city, 5k celebrity run and 10k open run for men were held in the city on Sunday.
Alumni Association of Sportspersons, who have represented University of Mysore (UoM), took the initiative and day the turned out to be a memorable one thousands of sports enthusiasts took part in the run.
Mayor B L Bhyrappa flagged off the marathon in the presence of international basketball player Dr Reshma Chengappa, Former director of Department of Physical education, Dr C Krishna, Director of Physical education Dr P Krishnaiah, convener Srikanth and others. The AAS organised the event to educate people on health benefits from physical activities.
The winner in 10K run bagged Rs 30,000, while second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth bagged Rs 25,000, Rs 20,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 and 5,000 in that order.
The winners in 5K men and women run won Rs 5,000 and runner Rs 3000. In the 5k run for high school boys and girls, winner bagged Rs 2,500, while second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth won Rs 2,000, Rs 1,500, Rs 10001 Rs 750 and Rs 5,000.
The association also conducted an inter-high school kabaddi competition for boys and throw ball tournament for girls. Over 17 teams for kabbadi and 12 teams for throw ball competition participated. The winners in the kabaddi and throwball competitions cash prize of Rs 12,000.
