The Mysuru South Police have on Thursday arrested a gang of highway robbers who robbed late night commuters on the Ooty Road. The arrested include a minor and two ITI students. All the gang members are from Gundlupet.
According to the police, the arrested are 19-year-old Thejas and Jabbir, 23-year-old Kiran, 19-year-old Mahendra, a 17-year-old (name withheld as he is a minor), and 26-year-old Imran. Thejas and Jabbir are pursuing their ITI at a college at Gundlupet while the others are daily wage labourers who also used to do odd jobs.
The gang targeted two wheelers and four wheelers on the Mysuru-Udhagamandalam (Ooty) road. They started their criminal activities beyond9 pm and used to rob people. Cars that carried two or three people were their usual targets.
Police said that the gang members were into cricket betting and needed money to fund illegal activities. Rs 17,000 in cash and 9 mobile phones were seized from them. The arrests were led by Inspector Jagadeesh and Sub-Inspector Mahesh.
