Three cabinet reshuffle taking 19 ministers of states to the cabinet and removing a few has evoked wide ranging speculations in the media. This has come after intense discussion between Narendra Modi and the BJP president Amit Shah after reviewing the performance of ministers after running the government for two years. The case of Smriti Irani as HRD minister who has been in the eye of the storm for her controversial statements which gave a handle to the opposition to severely criticise the NDA government has now been made the minister for textiles. The fact that she has been retained as a cabinet minister is a recognition of her talent and moreover textile has lot of potential for trade. It is possible that some of those who have been taken out may have enunciated good policy but failed to implement them. The message is now clear to all members of the cabinet that mere enunciation off policy howsoever noteworthy, it is in terms of implementation in the field the ministers’ performance would be judged. Modi is also against his ministers making controversial statements which may have a negative particularly with assembly elections due in some of the states.
