Former Lokayukta Justice N Santosh Hegde on Sunday said that Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) was established to do away with Lokayukta and not to curb corruption.
Speaking to reporters after attending the Basava Jayanti programme organised by Mysuru Veerashaiva Sajjana Sangha here, said that ACB can only receive complaints. It must take prior approval from State Cabinet to take further actions and for investigation. “The bureau has received four complaints against the Chief Minister so far and it needs the Cabinet’s approval for further action. Is it possible?” he questioned.
In 2014, a futile attempt was made to weaken the Lokayukta. But, now, though the police wing has been left with the Lokayukta, the powers to conduct raids on officers and peoples representatives are snatched away from the institution. But, as per the court orders, the Lokayukta will investigate pending cases before it, he confirmed. The former Justice however said that speedy investigation and punishment of the guilty would bring down corruption.
