Mysuru, July 6:- District In-charge and Higher Education Minister GT Devegowda distributed taxis to 94 beneficiaries from SC and ST communities under Airavata scheme here on Friday.
The event was jointly organised by Dr BR Ambedkar Development Board, Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki ST Development Board, Karnataka Adi Jambava Development Board, Karnataka Bhovi Development Board and Karnataka Taanda Development Board at JK Grounds in the city.
“Airavata scheme provides 5,000 vehicles to youths at a cost of Rs 22 crore in the state. The taxis were distributed in Bengaluru earlier and now the event is being distributed in Mysuru,” said the minister.
“The vehicles now distributed are for the year 2018-19 and more vehicles will be distributed for 2019-20. Each vehicle costs Rs 6 lakh. Subsidy of Rs 5 lakh is given which used to be Rs 2-3 lakh earlier. Youths have to make proper use of these schemes. Rs 6,000 crore is reserved for the social welfare department. SC-ST community has Rs 28,000 crore reserved,” he added.
“Along with distributing taxis, a contract has been made with Ola, Uber and other taxi services. Beneficiaries should make use of this,” he added.
Chamaraja Constituency MLA L Nagendra, Deputy Commissioner Abhiram G Sankar and others were present. (MR/HN)
