Ambedkar drew inspiration from Buddha to write constitution: Prof

“Our constitution, which is pioneered by Dr B R Ambedkar has huge influence of Buddha’s Dhamma,” said Prof Mallepuram G Venkatesh, Director, Polly Institutes, Kalaburgi at a seminar on ‘Buddha and Dhamma’, a book written by Dr B R Ambedkar.

The programme was organised by Dr B R Ambedkar Research and Extension Centre, University of Mysore at its premises.

Speaking at the programme he said, “There is a great need for all of us to understand what Dr Ambedkar thinks about Buddha and his philosophy. Ambedkar had always been attracted to the preachings of Buddha in terms of equality and liberal social structure.”

“Indeed, the chapters in our constitution have the great influence of social values introduced by Buddha. We could see that there are certain similarities in our constitution with Buddha’s translation of Sanskrit shlokas.”

“The book written by Ambedkar, ‘Buddha and Dhamma’ was released after one year of his parinirvana into Buddhism. This book is already been translated to Maratrhi, Gujrati, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada.” “It would not be inappropriate if we say this experiment is being made first time in our state to know about the application of Buddha Dhamma in our constitution. Perhaps, this will help us in order to understand our constitution,” he added.

K T Shivaprasad, Renowned painter, Prof J Somashekhar, Registrar (Examination), UoM, Rahul Kharge, President, Polly Institute, Kalaburgi and others were present.
