The second of the three tiger cubs that were apparently abandoned by their mother was found dead in the Nagarahole National Park on Saturday.
The carcass of the nine-month-old female tiger cub was found near Bisalwadi Lake at D P Kuppe forest range. Forest officials had noticed three cubs in the forest on July 24 and had laid camera traps to track their movements.
The veterinarian who conducted the post-mortem has confirmed that cub died of starvation.
Meanwhile, the forest officers said that as the cubs have been abandoned by their mother and hunt was on to trace it. “Though we have traced the cubs, they cannot be let into the zoo as they would affect others too. We are searching for the mother of these cubs which is been missing since the end of July,” they said.
It may be recalled that a similar incident was reported from Dattahalli beat of Metikuppe Range in Nagarahole in January 2015, when two tiger cubs were found dead due to starvation and there was no trace of their mother. The third cub was rescued and shifted to the Mysuru zoo for treatment, but it died a few days later.
