Dasara: ‘Arjuna’ starts rehearsing with wooden howdah

Mysuru, October 3:- The rehearsal of Dasara elephants is gaining heat as the Mysuru Dasara is fast approaching. Captain Arjuna was made to carry a wooden howdah as part of the rehearsal here on Wednesday.

Arjuna carried sandbags till today. He was made to carry wooden howdah weighing 250 kg and made to carry a total weight of 650 kg. He was accompanied by Chaithra, Cauvery, Vijaya and other elephants.

The weight was put on Arjuna’s back with the help of a crane at Mysuru Palace premises. He was made to undergo the rehearsal of floral tributes. Twelve elephants, including Arjuna, marched towards Bannimantap from Balarama arch.

The elephants started their journey at 8:30 am and reached Bannimantap within 1 hour and returned back to the Palace without problems.

Several placards were displayed on the elephants to mark Wildlife Week to create awareness. Placards saying ‘Shoot us with cameras, and not with guns’ carried a strong message.

“Arjuna is getting used to carrying weights. He was made to carry wooden howdah today,” said DCF Siddaramappa.

Veterinary doctor Dr Nagaraj said that Arjuna is made to carry a total weight of 650 kgs and along with him; Dhananjaya and Drona are also being trained to carry the howdah.

Public stood on either side of the road to witness the elephants marching towards Bannimantap. (MR/KS).
