Government should recognise artistes and give them a suitable position in the society, said Kannada and Culture Department Minister Umashree.
She was speaking at the condolence meeting of the senior theatre artist Manjunath Belekere who passed away recently, held at Bhoomigeetha, Rangayana on Wednesday.
She said that artistes sacrifice their entire life to theatre. Manjunath was an immensely talented artiste. “He was always up to something regarding theatre and plays. He used to work without any boundaries. His demise has caused a big void in theatre. Manjunath was a simple man, full of simplicity and manners. He is one of the finest actors the theatre has seen,” she said.
“An artiste’s personal life is usually filled with conflicts, but when they perform on stage, their only intention is to entertain the audience. Artistes should get the deserved recognition in the society,” she added.
Senior theatre personality Prasanna said that Manjunath was part of the theatre for 27 years. “He is one of the best versatile actors the theatre has ever seen. The theatre will miss him,” he said.
Nirmala Matapathi, deputy director, Department of Kannada and Culture, H Jenny, Rajashekhar Kadamba and others were present.
