Basavanna practically taught the changes a multi-dimensional character brings: Suttur seer

Mysuru, May 11:- “Social reformer Basavanna dedicated his entire life to face challenges. He practically proved how a multidimensional character can bring about changes in all stages of life,” said seer Shivaratri Deshikendra Swamiji of Suttur Mutt here on Saturday.

He was speaking after laying the foundation stone for Sri Basaveshwara Centre for Social Change, Research and Extension near Silk Farming Study Centre at Manasagangothri here.

“A separate centre is being set up for the better activities of Basaveshwara Centre at the University of Mysore (UoM). Several discussions are being held about Basavanna. Even after nine centuries after his death, he is always remembered. Though his ideologies and wishes were not widely discussed and debated when Basavanna was alive, it is taking place after 800-900 years. Basavanna told us universal truths. He led a religious, devotional and ethical life. Every human being can implement these qualities. There are several study centres in universities named after Basavanna. These centres can explain to the younger generations about the qualities and teachings of Basavanna,” he added.

“It is very difficult to explain Basavanna in words. His life had multi-dimensions. His words can be seen in philosophy, experience, religion, society, psychology and other fields. It is very important to study such a great personality. Researches should be held on the multi-dimensions of his character,” said seer Siddeshwara of Jnana Yogashrama of Vijayapura.

“Ethics is very important for every being. Basavanna advocated both internal and external purity. He said that is the only way to please the God,” he added.

Vice-Chancellor of the UoM Prof G Hemanth Kumar, UoM Registrar Prof Lingaraja Gandhi and others were present. (MR/GK)
