Biometric coupon-based system for kerosene distribution from June 1

To avert the misuse of the subsidy under Public Distribution System, the Department of Food and Civil Supplies is all set to launch a biometric coupon based system for kerosene distribution to ration card holders from June 1.

A training programme for fair price shops, PDOs and computer operators in this regard was held in the city on Friday. Coupon-based kerosene distribution system will be launched on a pilot basis in Mysuru, Nanjangud, T Narsipur, Bannur, K R Nagar, Periyapatna, H D Kote, Hunsur and Sargur. One Gram Panchayat(GP) in each taluk will be covered under the new system. If this kerosene distribution system gets a good feedback from the public, then all areas will be covered under the same initiative.

The eligible ration card holders have to generate coupons by furnishing their ration card and Aadhar card numbers which has become a necessity to avail benefits. A single ration card holder will get two litres of kerosene a month while two and more card holders will get four litres at a subsidised rate of Rs 18 per litre.

The beneficiaries can generate coupons by sending an SMS to 9731979899 which issues a unique code to the respective departments. In addition, coupons can be generated at MysuruOne, the GP office, Atalji Jana Snehi Kendra, by providing ration card and Aadhar numbers.

The fair price shop owners and kerosene retailers are told to buy an Android app phone which is necessary under the system to download the software.

Now, the beneficiaries need to link their Aadhar card at the earliest to get kerosene. For queries, contact toll free number: 18004259339.

After attending the training programme, the kerosene retailers staged a protest in front of Kalamandir on Hunsur Road expressing dissatisfaction as the new system mandates the purchase of a Android phone which they cannot afford. The kerosene allotment was inadequate and the income has been meager, they alleged.
