BJP workers oppose Tipu Jayanti, stage protest

Although the state government is firm on celebrating Tipu Jayanti on November 10, ordering elaborate security measures to ensure smooth celebrations, the BJP is still in protest-mode to pressurise the government to discontinue Tipu Jayanti.

A few BJP workers of Chamundeshwari constituency gathered at the Hinkal junction on Tuesday and shouted slogans against Tipu Sultan and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. They demanded that the state government should discontinue the birth celebration of a ruler who had “killed many Hindus in Kodagu”.

The protesters threatened to intensify the protest if the government doesn’t bow down to their demands. “Our protest would further intensify if the government goes ahead and celebrate Tipu Jayanti. We will block roads in protest,” BJP Chamundeshwari constituency president Anil Kumar Gowda threatened.

It may be mentioned that BJP leaders including MPs Shobha Karandlaje and Pratap Simha, BJP senior leader SA Ramdas and city BJP president B H Manjunath were arrested and released on Monday for breaching police barricades while protesting against Tipu Jayanti.

The protestors also demanded immediate arrest of people involved in RSS worker Magali Ravi’s ‘murder’. Ravi was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Periyapatna on Friday. BJP and RSS workers suspect the death to be a murder and have linked the ‘murder’ to Tipu Jayanti.

Party workers Gopal Rao, Revanna, Srinivas, Nagesh, Rajkumar and others were present during the protest.
