Blood feud: From NTR to Chirag Paswan, the saga of family coup in Indian politics

Prime News, National (New Delhi), June 15:- Chirag Paswan may draw some solace from it. Family members and blood relatives staging a coup are not confined to the kings and queens of the past. In the vibrant parliamentary democracies too, bloodless yet devastating takeovers by loved ones, have been experienced by many.

While Thackerays, Abdullahs, Yadavs and Badals were able to weather it, Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao aka NTR in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu’s Maruthur Gopalan Ramachandran’s wife Janaki had learnt the hard way, by losing their fiefdom.

For Chirag, a graduate in engineering and second-generation dynast, politics is suddenly looking as bleak as his acting career. Ram Vilas Paswan’s son had entered Bollywood in 2011 starring opposite Kangana Ranaut in “Miley Naa Miley Hum”. The film bombed at the box office even though some fans had liked his stellar looks and likable personality.

He sought comfort in the family profession of politics where a towering personality, Ram Vilas Paswan had used his clout to get as many relatives as MPs and MLAs as possible. Chirag, a one-film wonder and winner of Stardust’s “Superstar of Tomorrow” [2012], won Lok Sabha election in 2014. Ram Vilas Paswan was eager to crown his son and nearly a year before his death; Chirag was made president of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP). (MR, Inputs: Agencies).
