Cabinet clears new district hospital

Estimated cost of the new hospital is Rs 70 crore; facility expected to ease pressure on K R Hospital and Cheluvamba Hospitals.

The State Cabinet has finally cleared a proposal to establish a District Hospital in Mysuru. At a meeting held at Vidhana Soudhaon Wednesday morning, the Cabinet gave its nod to establish a 500-bed hospital with all the ultra-modern facilities.

The estimated cost of the new district hospital is Rs 70 crore and the facility is expected to ease the pressure on the K R Hospital and Cheluvamba Hospital that are administered by Mysore Medical College and Research Institute. The new hospital would function under the Department of Health and Family Welfare and will have a separate trauma centre.

Mysuru is the only district in the state that does not have a district hospital and the District Health Office has submitted a detailed report to the Public Works Department. The report highlighted the necessity of a separate district hospital as it would reduce the pressure on K R Hospital and Cheluvamba Hospital.

Following the report by the District Health Office, a detailed project report was prepared by the Public Works Department and was submitted to the government for approval.

The K R and Cheluvamba hospitals are under severe pressure as hundreds of patients from the district including far-flung areas make a beeline every day. The doctors too are unable to render good service to all of them and there is a severe staff crunch and limited infrastructure, the report said.

At present, though the K R Hospital is ill-equipped to handle the huge number of patients, especially the accident victims, medico-legal cases from across the district are being referred there. Once the district hospital is set up cases would not be referred to the K R or Cheluvamba hospitals and people could get free medical services at the new hospital.

According to sources in the health department, the site to house the hospital has not yet been finalised. District health officers had identified two locations – one on the SMT Hospital premises near Ballal Circle where over 5 acres are available and the Bhoothaal Pitch in Vidyaranyapuram where over 15 acres are available.

One more location had been proposed by the district administration at Chowdahalli on the H D Kote Road where over 20 acres are available.
