Farmers, led by Kurubur Shanthakumar, on Tuesday staged a protest by blocking the national highway at Hullahalli Circle in the town for about 30 minutes, disrupting vehicular traffic on Mysuru-Ooty Road. They shouted slogans demanding scientific price for sugarcane.
Speaking on the occasion, Shanthakumar said that the government should pay compensation to the farmers in Kabini basin who were facing crop loss. He demanded a compensation of Rs 25,000 per acre to farmers who had grown paddy and Rs 3,000 per tonne of sugarcane being supplied to sugar factories. “The central government should waive farm loans from nationalised banks and supply uninterrupted power for 10 hours for agricultural pump sets,” he added.
Shanthakumar said that the District In-charge Minister, Chief Minister and elected representatives have totally neglected the farmers. ‘If the district administration fails to take appropriate measures, the farmers would lay siege to the Deputy Commissioner’s office on February 14,’ warned the farmers’ leader. Tahsildar M Dayanand met the farmers and received a memorandum.
