Centre opposes release of Rajiv convicts

Prime News, Nation (Chennai), August 11:-The central government on Friday opposed the release of the convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

When the petition filed by the convicts seeking their release from prison came up for hearing in the Madras High Court, the Centre in its response said it will not under any circumstances release the convicts – Robert Payas and Jayakumar.

It also informed the Madras High Court to dismiss the mercy killing petition filed by Robert Payas.

The key convicts in the Rajiv case had submitted a petition to the Madras High Court to find out if they have been included in the list of prisoners proposed to be released on the eve of Republic Day.

They had first filed a petition in 2012 requesting the government to release them arguing that they had completed 20 years of servitude in jail and citing examples of several lifetime convicts who had been released after serving 14 years.
