Mysuru Forest Department officials observed the Forest Martyrs’ Day and paid floral tribute and gun salute to the martyrs at the Aranaya Bhavan, on Sunday.
Forest department observes Martyrs’ Day every year on September 11 to remember the forest officials who sacrificed their lives to protect the forest and the wildlife. It marks the death anniversary of Deputy Conservator of Forests Srinivas, who was beheaded by Veerappan in the year of 1991.
“Between 1966 and 2016, the forest department lost 39 brave officials in various forests of Karnataka. It was a crucial time to save the trees and wildlife during the time of Veerappan. We lost DCF Srinivas during an operation against Veerappan. Since then, the department has been observing September 11 as Martyrs’ Day. It is our duty to remember those brave souls,” said Chief Conservator of Forest (CCF) BM Parameshwar.
