The Director of Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) Awadesh Kumar Mishra has been booked for allegedly sexually harassing an Assistant Professor from Visva Bharathi, a Central University, situated in West Bengal.
A complaint has been registered at the Jayalakshmipuram police station and the police took the complainant to a city court to record her statement before the magistrate on Tuesday. Prof Mishra has been booked on sexual harassment and stalking charges in connection with incidents in 2013 and 2014
According to the complainant, she came on contact with Prof Mishra when she visited CIIL in Mysuru during 2013 to participate in a workshop. He had allegedly maintained contact with her even after the conclusion of the workshop over phone.
The complainant, who is an Assistant Professor with Assamese language unit of Visva Bharathi, has accused Prof Mishra of making explicit sexual overtures and harassing her. She has alleged that the professor started harassing her when she contacted him for certificate of the seminar.
She has also lodged a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), New Delhi, based on which the city police have been asked to lodge a complaint.
Prof Mishra has been booked under Section 354 A of IPC, which deals with sexual harassment, besides Section 354 D of IPC that deals with stalking.
A police team went to CIIL on Tuesday to question Prof Mishra returned empty handed after they were told that he had gone on leave citing health reasons.
