S Basavaraju, 76, a resident of Vidyaranyapuram, here, has made the city and state proud by winning Gold Medal in the below 66 kgs weight and above 70 years Master’s Category at the Senior National Power Lifting Championships held at Coimbatore, recently.
He has also set a new national record by lifting a total weight of 190 Kgs (Squat: 65 Kgs, Bench Press: 45 Kgs, Dead Lift: 80 Kgs).
The championships was organised by Indian Power Lifting Federation, which is recognised by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India and International Power lifting Federation.
S Basavaraju is a retired state government employee who has served in the education, survey and industries and commerce departments for nearly 35 years. Started competing since two years, this veteran power lifter has so far won two gold medals at the annual State Power Lifting Competitions.
He has been training at the Apollo Gymnasium, one of the very oldest gymnasiums in the state and owned by Y Nagesh Rao, a retired defence personal, physical education teacher and a keen sports enthusiast. Apollo Gymnasium has so far produced numerous state and national level body builders, weightlifters and power lifters who have won prizes even at international competitions, using only traditional methods and traditional equipment.
Being one the oldest members of the Apollo Gymnasium (since 1965), winning gold medal and also for setting a new national record, the members of the Apollo Gymnasium headed by chief trainer Y Nagesh Rao, honoured S Basavaraju at the gymnasium premises, recently.
