Scouts and Guides Grounds: The first-ever concise book on epic ‘Mahabharata’ written in Kodava language by Kanathanda S Muthappa has been brought out by Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy (KKSA).
The book was released by P G Chengappa, former Vice Chancellor, University of Agriculture Science, Bengaluru at the valedictory function of the two-day state-level Kodava Sahitya Mela organsied by KKSA, Madikeri and the Kodava Samaja, Mysuru, here on Sunday.
Muthappa who hails from Thithimathi of Virajpet taluk in Kodagu district is the elder brother of late retired Superintendent of Police K S Thammaiah, who had earned a reputation as the Mysuru’s anti-rowdy squad (ARS) chief in mid-1990s.
Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy had taken a year to complete the compilation of the book with Kannada as its script. The academy had sought opinions of the experts, linguists and writers before deciding to publish it.
The 300-page book will enable Kodavas and lovers of the language to read the epic in their mother tongue and comprehend the epic.
“I was keen to bring out the Kodava edition of the Mahabharata to reach out to the younger generation as they have little time to read volumes of the great epic,” said Muthappa.
On the occasion one more book ‘Yakshaprashne’ written by Kechavada Subbamma Thimmaiah was also released by Chengappa.
“Kodava language is a part of the family of Dravidian languages and the culture of Kodagu prevailed because of the language. Thus, we the people of Kodagu have greater responsibility to protect the language and the culture,” said Writer, Kanathanda S Muthappa
