As part of the ongoing Dasara celebrations in the city, the food mela sub-committee had organised ‘Nala-Damayanthi’, a cooking competition for married couples on Oct 3 at the Bharat Scouts and Guides grounds, Mysuru.
The task given to the couples was to prepare the traditional ‘Ragi rotti and huchchellu chutney’. The couples were judged on the basis of their co-ordination, understanding, cleanliness and presentation.
Dr Hemalatha of department of Science at the Karnataka State Open University was one of the judges for the competition. Speaking to City Today, she said that Ragi (millet) consists of many nutritional factors and Huchchellu comprises anti-oxidants. Instead of feeding children with pizza and burgers, people should make use of vegetables and ragi rottis to stay healthy and fit.

First prize winner Manohar spoke to ‘City Today’ and said that even though he was reluctant initially about cooking in the public, as the competition progressed, he felt confident and it helped him in winning the prize in their first ever cooking competition.
A Few couples managed to cook around 6 to 8 ragi rottis while some others could only manage only 4. By the end of the day, the entire stage carried the odour of ragi rottis and huchchellu chutney.
