Mysuru, July 25:- The students who had undertaken the one-year Post-Graduation Programme in Sports Management (PGPSM) offered by Centre for Sports and Management Studies (CS&MS) at Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Institute for Management Development (SDMIMD), Mysuru, have secured 100 per cent placement in academic year 2018-19.
As many as 10 students from the batch have received career-oriented offers from leading sporting bodies and organisations.
The scope of the course is varied and opens a wide variety of career options. Right from managing grass root sports, sports retailing, sports media, event management, sports operations, sports marketing, sports tourism, adventure sports, sports nutrition, sports training, sports facility management, etc. The course gives the students an opportunity to understand the business of sports. Gone are those days, when the career was only limited to engineering or medicine; with sports sector growing rapidly and expected to boom in the next couple of years, the trend is slowly making a shift towards having a specialised education in sports management and pursuing a career that is driven by a passion towards sports.
The students also underwent a mandatory 8-week internship in various companies as a part of their academic curriculum. The PGPSM programme focuses on practical training and gives them ample exposure to the aspirants with skilled personalities from the sporting sector to mentor and prepare the students. There is more to sports than what the eye sees on a TV set or from a spectator’s point of view. Getting these coveted jobs requires technical knowledge, analytical mind, management skills, good communication skill and a sharp business mind. Through this programme and the internship, the students are prepared and nurtured to take their first big step into the huge sporting industry.
The sports business professional students were provided with the flexibility to choose their area of interest with respect to their career. The students landed internships and placements during the course of the academic year at various sporting organisations like JSW’s Inspire Institute of Sports, PUMA, Tenvic Sports, GoSports Foundation, Bengaluru Football Club, Karnataka Premier League (KPL), Outlook India, Indian Super League (ISL), Prakash Padukone Sports Management, Decathlon, Sports KPI, Avyaya Integrated Brand Solutions Pvt Ltd, KSCA, etc.
Pratik Budhdeo, who got placed in Puma, said, “As sports industry is on the rise, my motto was to gain additional knowledge about retailing and marketing. Our family has a sports retailing business and before I join the family business, I wanted to gain some experience in the same field. I got the theoretical and technical knowledge from the classes and placement in Puma gives me the right exposure to learn about the sports retailing industry. Puma is currently ranked No 51 in India’s best places to work and I’m excited to be a part of this company. This experience will give me deeper insights into the industry and the market requirements and customer behaviour.”
With sports now a lucrative career option, there is a need for a formal education that prepares the passionate students to pursue their dream job in the sports sector.
