Mysuru, February 24:- “English is the language of communication; it is used more in a classroom scenario than in day-to-day interaction. Therefore, more hours of learning should be allotted to learn the English language the way it is used at international level,” said Prof Mahadeva, chairman, Board of Studies (BoS) in English (UG/PG), University of Mysore (UoM).
He was speaking at the inauguration of the second in a series of five workshops for ‘Curriculum development for Undergraduate courses in English’ jointly organised by the Department of English, SBRR Mahajana First Grade College, Mysuru and the Board of Studies in English, UoM.
Further, he questioned the logic of allotting the same number of hours of learning to both English and Kannada at college level when a student’s exposure to English language comes at a later stage of his education.
Speaking on the role and responsibility of an English teacher, Prof Mahadeva said, “Teaching language through literature is essential; a teacher has enormous mystic energy, he should channelise it to find innovative ways to teach students necessary vocabulary so that they learn to be more expressive.”
Dr S R Ramesh, chief executive officer (CEO) and academic advisor, graced the occasion.
Principal Dr S Venkataramu presided. Members of BoS Dr Suma Embar, Dr Venkatesh, Prof Jude Gavin Wilson, K R Manjunath, head, Department of English; faculty members Geetha and Dr Indrani were present.
Faculty members from different colleges participated in the workshop to contribute teaching material to the proposed text. –(KK)
