DC Sankar holds slum adalat; slum dwellers seek protection for women and girls

Mysuru, January 4:- The slum dwellers requested the Deputy Commissioner Abhiram G Sankar to provide protection to women and girls living in slums.

The DC organised the adalat for slum dwellers for the first time at the Institution of Engineers (India) Hall on JLB Road here on Friday. The residents from various slum areas in the city attended the event.

Slum dweller Mangala Gowri said that the garbage from various layouts was being dumped at their slum area. Another slum dweller Hanumanthaiah said that the slum dwellers have not yet received any ownership papers of the houses allotted to them. They said that they are made homeless in the name of Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). They alleged that men were luring women and girls and taking them away and sought protection. The slum dwellers aired their grievances including illegal wine shops operating at slums, garbage, drinking water problem, house, bus facility, anganwadi and other issues.

An official informed that the library, anganwadi and other facilities are provided at multi-purpose community centre and has been handed over to the association. A slum resident said that several development works have been stopped midway and the doors and windows of community centre were stolen.

The Deputy Commissioner who gave a patient hearing at the adalat, instructed the officials to solve the problems of JNNURM Layout and all the slums. (KS, NGB)
