Prime News, State (Bengaluru), May 26:- Congress high command will take a final decision on who will be the state party chief in a couple of days’ time, said AICC general secretary, in charge of Karnataka, K C Venugopal here on Thursday. Venugopal also gave a hint that the party may maintain status quo, by asking present KPCC chief Dr Parameshwar to continue, while adding that the decision on the new chief will be decided by month-end.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is expected to meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi and a couple of other senior party leaders to discuss this issue. The Chief Minister had earlier recommended that Dr Parameshwar, a Dalit, be replaced with a Lingayat leader. Senior party leader S R Patil and Water Resources Minister M B Patil (both Lingayats) are in the race.
Energy Minister D K Shivakumar, a Vokkaliga leader, it seems, is also keen on the coveted post. There are some MLAs who want to see veteran party leader M Mallikarjun Kharge taking over the mantle.
Considering that the caste factor plays a major role in state politics, Congress leadership will look into all aspects before arriving at a decision on the new party chief. The state assembly elections are slated to be held in June next year. (MR).
