Digitalisation is a boon to media industry: Senior journalist Shamala Padmanabhan

Mysuru, July 18:- “Journalism is a different ball game with post-internet and digital media. The social networking sites, internet, apps and digital media have laid a path of rapid development in the field of new era media. Emerging technologies have helped various media platforms to evolve and see their own development,” opined senior journalist Shamala Padmanabhan.

She delivered a lecture on “Print to Digital – The changing phase of media revolution,” organised by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at SBRR Mahajana First Grade College, Jayalakshmipuram here on Wednesday.

Speaking on the positive effects of digitalisation on the media industry, the speaker pointed out that technological advance has made it possible for the newer forms of media which has displaced others using illustrative examples. “Online journalism has brought a lot of exposure to students. Therefore she insisted that media persons should get hybrid training for strategic news from new media to the corporate level. The senior correspondent was of the view that there are many news media avenues like QR Codes, Facebook page, blogging and text messages which can figure out the correct way to use and learn the new media technologies. Broadcasters, digital media and publishers now have wider prospects because digitalisation has spurred the growth of online journalism.”

Shamala called upon the students to minimise the gap between theory and practice. She emphasised the need to improve writing skills and stressed that the knowledge of multiple languages, computers and apps are a pre-requisite for students of journalism. Her vast experience in the field of journalism enabled the students to have a good interactive session.

CEO and academic advisor Dr SR Ramesh, principal Dr S Venkataramu, HoD L Ravi Iyer and assistant professor Keshava Murthy were present on the occasion. Students of the Department of Journalism benefitted from the lecture.

The stage was managed by the students. Bharathi HC rendered the invocation, Brunda welcomed the gathering, Sindhu Nagaraj introduced the speaker, Shwetha proposed vote of thanks and Ravishankar compered the programme. (MR)
