Dowry harassment: Woman immolates self with her child in Mysuru

Mysuru, August 4:- Harassed for dowry, a 24-year-old woman set herself and her two-year-old child ablaze at Mahadevapura Layout in the city on Saturday.

The deceased have been identified as Gowramma and her two-year-old son Nihal.

According to police sources, the incident came to light on Saturday morning when the neighbours alerted the police about the death of the mother and a child.

Gowramma, a native of K R Pet Taluk married Lohith from Mysuru three years ago. The couple had a two-year-old child and were residing at a house at Mahadevapura Layout here. Lohith, a teacher by profession, was working at a high school in Malur.

On Friday late night it is alleged that Gowramma immolated herself and her son. The family members of the victim alleged that her husband Lohith was demanding dowry and he and his family may have killed her.

“We had given dowry at the time of marriage, but Lohith and his family members demanded more money from Gowramma’s family. The husband and his family members have killed her and the child for not getting the dowry,” the family members alleged.

Vidyaranyapuram Police officers visited the house and conducted mahazar. The body was sent for the post mortem to MMC&RI mortuary here. The police have registered a case and further investigations are on. -(KS,KK)
