Education policy

R Subramanian, who headed a committee, has given a report containing more than 90 recommendations to address the challenges of our education system. Referring to the crisis in education in answering the incisive questions by Praksh Kumar  of Deccan Herald, Subramanian cites his own example of losing close to two years while he was pursuing a Master degree from the Calcutta university. This is a throwback to the recent agitation in Jawaharlal Nehru University and Hyderabad Central University that brought to fore many contentious issues. Referring to the present day student agitation, he says that though Article 19  of  our constitution gives freedom of speech and expression,  observes that the purpose of university  is not  to produce ‘demagogue’ but to give education and suggests reasonable  restrictions  on such freedom to maintain public order. Now the government has to take a call but what constitutes reasonable restrictions has to be gone through carefully to come out with a consensus of broad agreement from all parties.
