The entry of private vehicles was banned in Chamundi hills on Sunday following heavy rush of vehicles which was expected.
To minimise the traffic flow to the hills, the temple authorities have announced ban on private vehicles to the hills. On Saturday, thousands of devotees, including tourists, parked their vehicles at the allotted helipad area near the Lalitha Mahal Palace and then took the KSRTC bus to reach the hill. The temple authorities, who had expected a lakh devotee on New Year Day, had made all necessary arrangement at the temple and also with KSRTC and made sure enough number of buses were available to ferry the visitors.
The parking at the helipad area was made free, but visitors were charged Rs 15 for regular KSRTC buses and Rs 20 for Volvo busses to travel 10-km distance. Over 25 and odd busses were plying from helipad to the hill. Tourists from other places expressed displeasure when their vehicles were not allowed. However, a few devotees parked their cars and bikes close to the hill and took buses which slowed down the traffic movement.
On Saturday night, the city police had also restricted entry of vehicles to the Chamundi Hills after 10 00 pm and the decision was taken to avoid nuisance atop the hill.
