Mysuru, September 26:- There are many fake universities in the country that have honoured and keep honouring people with doctorates in many disciplines for money. Such fake universities continue to thrive, thanks to their political clout. One such university is International Global Peace University, which claims to be headquartered in Chennai.
Acting on a tip-off, DCP (Law and Order) Dr A N Prakash Gowda and his team raided a private hotel in the city around 10 am on Saturday (September 26). The function was being held in connection with the distribution of fake doctorates to more than a hundred people. Caught unawares, many of the organisers took to their heels. The police managed to arrest three people supposedly from the International Global Peace University.
The fake university, according to the police sources, has spread its tentacles all over the country. It keeps holdings functions at different cities in the garb of distributing fake doctorates for lakhs of rupees. The police seized fake certificates and mementoes at the venue. A case has been registered at Vijayanagar Police Station.
The police had prior information that more than 120 people from different parts of the country were going to be bestowed with fake doctorates. The police team was ready with a plan and conducted the raid accordingly.
Mandya University Kannada lecturer Dr S N Shankaregowda had asked University of Mysore (UoM) Vice-Chancellor Dr Hemanth Kumar to raise voice against the fake universities. He had said, “These fake doctorates are spoiling the education system in the country. We should put an end to it. ”Maddur’s C S Suresh has filed a PIL in Karnataka High Court in this connection. The High Court had issued notices to the Central Human Resources Development Department and University Grants Commission.
Many doctorate aspirants from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, who had allegedly paid Rs 50,000 or Rs 1 lakh for the certificates, had to return home disappointed. (MR/KS)
