Demanding release of water for canals of Maddur, farmers staged a flash protest by blocking the Bengaluru – Mysuru highway near Gejjelegere, Maddur taluk on Sunday.
In the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s order to release water to Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had promised the state farmers that necessary water will be released to them through canals, but no water has been released to Mysuru, Mandya, Ramanagar region till date, said farmers.
Hundreds of farmers gathered in the early hours on Sunday on the highway and staged a protest against the government. The police have beefed up security in the region. The protesting farmers continued the blockade demanding the officials of water department to meet them.
Anticipating problems, the weekend crowd that arrives from Bengaluru to the city took a detour through Malavalli and Kanakapura. As a result of this, the Bengaluru–Mysuru highway was virtually deserted, but the Mysuru–Bannur road that links Malavalli witnessed an unprecedented density of vehicles.
