Mysuru, January 1:- “The decision of the government to pay Rs 1,835 per quintal of paddy is unscientific. It should be increased by another Rs 500,” said the state president of Sugarcane Growers’ Association, Kuruburu Shanthakumar.
He was speaking at a meeting of farmers held at T Narasipura APMC Hall recently regarding the problems of farmers. He said that the instruction of the government to the farmers to register themselves, saying they have grown paddy in pahani land will be problematic.
“The tougher instructions of the state government to sell paddy will not help the farmers. The guidelines should be changed to help the farmers. More than 20 lakh farmers grow paddy in the state. Dal growers get a support price of Rs 300 per quintal. If not, it would have been an injustice for them,” he added.
“Middlemen who sell paddy are cheating farmers. Officials should visit the rural areas to serve justice to the farmers,” he urged.
“Bannari Amman Sugar factory has increased the harvesting charges of sugarcane by Rs 680 per tonne and is cheating farmers. If the problem isn’t solved, we will stage a protest in front of the factory,” he said.
Attahalli Devaraj, Kuruburu Siddesh, Rangasamudra Suresh, Parashivamurthy, Prasad Naik and others were present. (MR/KS)
