Farmers should grow alternate crop in place of tobacco: Mysoremath

Mysuru, February 12:- Zilla Panchayat, District Health and Family Welfare Department and National Tobacco Control Cell organised a workshop for all tobacco distributors and merchants to make tobacco-free Mysuru at Mysore Chamber of Commerce and Industries here on Monday.

“Tobacco consumption is increasing even among children. It is a shocking development. The government says it will control tobacco growing. On the other hand, it is giving a subsidy for tobacco. We need a healthy society. Tobacco spoils life. Farmers have to reduce growing tobacco. It is reported that 8 lakh people may die by 2020 due to tobacco consumption. The government has introduced several programmes for the welfare of the people and society. Have they really reached the people and farmers? Farmers have to seriously think of growing an alternate crop for tobacco,” said social worker Vasanthkumar Mysoremath.

Tobacco consultant district assistant Shivakumar, president of Mysore Chamber of Commerce A S Satish, programme manager Jithan Chandran and others were present. (MR/GK)
