Farmers stage protest for hike in FRP for sugarcane

Farmers who have grown sugarcane staged a protest at the premises of DC office urging the government to hike the FRP of sugarcane. “The sugarcane yield has decreased by 40% this year and it has led to a hike in production cost. To rescue the farmers, the FRP should be increased,” urged the farmers.

Speaking on the occasion, president of the Sugarcane growers’ Association, Kurubur Shanthakumar said: “Last year sugar price was Rs 2,800 per quintal. Farmers were getting Rs 2,469 per tonne. This year, the sugar price is hiked to Rs 4,000 per quintal, but Bannary factory has only paid Rs 2,300 to the farmers, a huge difference. The company is cheating the farmers by not distributing the profit to the farmers. Sugar minister had ordered the factories to pay an additional Rs 300 per tonne of sugarcane to the farmers in Bagalkote, Belagavi, Vijayapura districts. He should also direct the Bannary factory to pay an additional amount Rs 500 to the farmers per tonne of sugarcane. If it doesn’t happen, the farmers will stage a week-long protest.”

Organising secretary of the association, Devaraj and hundreds of farmers took part in the protest.
