The State Sugarcane Growers Association, Mysuru and Chamaraja Nagar have threatened to launch an indefinite strike, if water for the irrigation canals of Kabini Dam was stopped from August 30.
The farmers alleged that the authorities plan to stop the release of water to the irrigation canals of Kabini dam is unfair.
Speaking on the occasion, association president Kurubur Shanthakumar said that paddy had been planted in about 70,000 hectares of land and paddy saplings had been kept ready for planting in about 30,000 hectares in the command area. “How can they stop release of water when farmers have invested so much of money?” he questioned.
Shanthakumar alleged that the horticulture department had been misleading people by claiming that the water was being stopped to the canals to ensure there was enough drinking water. However, the reason is untrue and they want to release water to Tamil Nadu.
Farmers will hold a massive demonstration in front of CADA office on August 30 demanding continuous release of water to irrigation purposes.
