Mangaluru, May 10:- Public Works Minister Dr H C Mahadevappa on Wednesday advised people to follow the path shown by great people like Gautam Buddha, Basavanna and Dr B R Ambedkar. The minister was speaking after inaugurating Pavitra Buddha Jayanti, organised by the DK District Buddha Mahasabha. “These great people were true democrats who advocated a democratic set-up. What Buddha taught then is still relevant today. Buddhism is built on pillars of kindness and consciousness,” he said.
“Democracy is a way to protect weaker sections from being suppressed by stronger sections. The aim of democracy is to prevent communal forces or fundamentalists from coming to power. Dr. Ambedkar, as a labour commission member, also supported war against inequality. Buddha’s teachings were against the superstitions and he was the opinion that love and equality were the essence of life. Buddha transformed the minds of people with truth. Communalism and fundamentalism harm democracy, he said.
Speaking to reporters after the function, Dr Mahadevappa said he was happy over the Congress government completing four years successfully. “As said in the manifesto, the government has fulfilled the promises made to the people. In the coming one year, we will work for more development”, he said.
On KPCC presidential position, he said that high command will chose an eligible person democratically. He also clarified that he was not an aspirant for the position. (MR).
