Mysuru, January 25:- The Department of Information Science and Engineering of GSSS Institute of Engineering and Technology for Women (GSSSIETW), accredited to NBA, New Delhi, had organised a four-day workshop on ‘Big data analytics’ in association with AIESEC, IIT, New Delhi and GeeksLAB Technologies Pvt Ltd, New Delhi, from January 21 to 24.
The workshop was inaugurated on Monday by Parag Kulkarni, Technical Evangelist and Corporate Trainer, GeeksLAB Technologies Pvt Ltd, Dr Shivakumar M, Principal GSSSIETW and Dr Reshma Banu, Convener, Professor and Head, Department of Information Science and Engineering, GSSSIETW.
Kulkarni, enlightened the audience about how ‘big data analytics’ helps organisations harness their data and use it to identify new opportunities that in turn leads to agile moves, more efficient operations and higher profits.
Dr Shivakumar addressed the participants about the need for current technologies like big data analytics. He encouraged students to embrace and learn new technologies.
The workshop received a splendid response with around 50 participants from various research and academic community namely BGSIT Nagamangala, Bapuji Institute of Engineering andTechnology, Davangere; PES University, Bengaluru; St. Philomena’s College (Autonomous), Mysuru;, MVJ College of Engineering, Bengaluru; BMSIT Bengaluru and MRIT, MIT Mysore.
Day 1:The workshop began with a technical session, giving awareness to participants about big data and big data analytics. Kulkarni gave an overview of stages in big data analytics, domains and use cases. He emphasised on how data is driven by specialised analytics systems and software as well as high-powered computing systems. He revealed that big data analytics offers various business benefits, including new revenue opportunities, more effective marketing, better customer service, improved operational efficiency and competitive advantages over rivals.
Day 2: The session began with Kulkarni giving an overview of Hadoop and its tools YARN, MapReduce, Spark, HBase, Hive, Pig. MapReduce. Hands-on Session had participants, working on Hadoop YARN applications, managing Hadoop with Apache Ambari, Basic Hadoop Administration followed by Business Intelligence Concepts and Application which includes Data Warehousing, Data Mining, Data Visualisation Procedures.
Day 3: The participants were provided with information about Decision Trees, Regression techniques, and big data applications in Artificial Neural Networks, Cluster Analysis, Association Rule Mining. Case studies related to Text Mining, Naïve- Bayes Analysis, Support Vector Machines, Web Mining, Social Network Analysis was done during a hands-on session.
Day 4: Students completed assignments on topics covered during the three days of the workshop. The assignments was related to topics like HDFS, MapReduce, Apache Ambari, etc.
The workshop concluded with a valedictory function with participants being handed over certificates. The workshop was much appreciated with participants sharing their experience about knowledge the workshop provided about Big Data Analytics. (MR)
