French Open 2020: Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal sail through to 2nd round

Prime Sports, International Sport, Tennis, Paris, September 30:- Serbian Novak Djokovic had an easy victory in his first match at the Roland Garros, where he sailed through with a 6-0, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Mikael Ymer.

Djokovic started strongly and won the opening set in just 20 minutes. But his error-free game got tossed around when in the second set he dropped serve early. However he regrouped and put it to bed at 6-2.

Little over three weeks since Djokovic was defaulted in the U.S. Open fourth round for hitting a line judge with a ball, he seemed cool as he outclassed the young player from Sweden.

Djokovic also showed his sporting self when he led the applause for Ymer when he played a sensational between-the-legs winner.

But it was one-way traffic as Djokovic polished off the second set with his trademark clean hitting.

The 80th-ranked Ymer, facing a world number one for the first time, stuck manfully to his task in the third set and Djokovic became a little sloppy as he handed back a service break with a double-fault after which he flexed his hand.

Top seed Djokovic, bidding for a second French Open title, glared at someone in the crowd in the following game and re-focussed to reel off the last three games for victory.

Nadal had it easy as well

On Monday, Rafael Nadal began his pursuit of a record-tying 20th men’s Grand Slam title with a straight-sets victory at the French Open while Serena Williams made a slow but successful start in her latest bid to equal Margaret Court’s all-time mark.

Nadal, 34, needs one more Slam to match Roger Federer’s record but has described the defence of his Roland Garros crown as the “most difficult ever” given the cold and damp conditions of a tournament delayed four months by the coronavirus pandemic.

Claycourt master Rafael Nadal started his quest for a record-extending 13th French Open title with a straightforward 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 first-round win against Belarusian Egor Gerasimov on Monday. (MR, Inputs: Agencies).
