Groundwater level declining day by day: ZP CEO Jyothi

Public awareness workshop on 'Protection of groundwater' inaugurated in Mysuru

Mysuru, February 18:- “We all depend on water for our survival, but the groundwater level is declining day by day. If we do not take action to protect it, we may have to face days without water,” said the CEO of Mysuru Zilla Panchayat.

She was speaking at a public awareness workshop on “Protection of groundwater” at the auditorium of State Urban Development Institute organised in association with District Groundwater Directorate on Tuesday.

“We can’t survive without water. But the groundwater is being used excessively. The groundwater level is also declining and its quality is also declining. It is the responsibility of the state government to protect the groundwater level. We have to create awareness among the public. They are not aware of the seriousness of this issue. We have to inform them how we can increase the groundwater level,” she said.

“Rainwater harvesting can also help in increasing the groundwater level. Bore wells should not be dug everywhere. It has to be dug only if it is necessary. Afforestation, reviving groundwater and other initiatives should be taken to protect groundwater level,” she said.

BT Kantharaj of Groundwater Directorate released the handbook. Director of SIUD Venkatesh Kadagada, Mahanthesh, retired scientist of ISRO Prof Jagannath and others were present. (MR/KS)
