HDK questions state move to release water to TN

State JD(S) president H D Kumaraswamy has questioned the state government’s move to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu when farmers in Mandya and surrounding areas are facing water crisis.

Addressing the protesters in Mandya on Thursday, Kumaraswamy alleged that more than 43 tmcft of water has already been released to Tamil Nadu in the past three months while a meagre 7.85 tmcft of water has been provided to farmers in Karnataka to take up agriculture. “How can the state government be so insensitive to the problems of our farmers and adopt a step motherly attitude?” he questioned.

“At present, Karnataka has only 106tmcft of water in its four reservoirs in the Cauvery basin and Tamil Nadu is demanding 50 tmcft out of it. What will our farmers do if the state government yields to the pressure from Tamil Nadu? They will be in trouble.”  He lambasted the Congress government for not giving a befitting answer to Tamil Nadu whenever it tries to humiliate the state.

“Don’t release a single drop of water to Tamil Nadu. Let us be prepared to face the consequences,” he told the state government.

Later, JD(S) leaders and party workers held a rasta roko on Mysuru -Bengaluru Highway and stopped vehicular traffic for four hours.

JD(S) MLC C S Puttanaih, MLA’s and MLC’s were present.
