Income Tax dept initiates probe against perfume baron Piyush Jain, records statement in jail

Prime News, National (New Delhi), May 28:- After the Directorate General of GST Intelligence and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, now the Income Tax department has initiated an investigation against Kanpur-based perfume baron Piyush Jain. Piyush Jain was arrested on charges of tax evasion last year after a huge amount of cash and gold was recovered from his house.

On Friday, the Income Tax department recorded his statement inside the jail where he is lodged at present. He was questioned for more than five hours by the officials.

Special Public Prosecutor Ambreesh Tandon told India Today that a letter was sent by DGGI’s Ahmedabad unit to the Income Tax department asking them to investigate Piyush Jain. The Income Tax department then filed an application in court seeking permission to interrogate Piyush Jain inside jail.

The court granted permission and Piyush Jain’s statement was recorded by Income Tax department officials on Friday. The team entered jail premises around 11 am and left by 5 pm.

In December 2021, the Ahmedabad unit of Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) conducted a raid at Piyush Jain’s Kannauj house and seized over Rs 195 crore in cash, 23 kilograms of gold and sandalwood oil worth Rs 6 crore. Of the 23kg of gold, 11 kg had a foreign mark. The DGGI said the gold was smuggled from abroad. (MR, Inputs: Agencies).
