Independence Day celebrated with fervour

The 70th Independence Day was celebrated amidst tight security at Bannimantap grounds on Monday. District In-charge Minister Dr H C Mahadevappa unfurled the tricolour and received guard of honour from 28 different platoons. The city soaked in patriotic fervour as various organisations, institutions and companies celebrated Independence Day with great enthusiasm.

Delivering the Independence Day address, Mahadevappa said, “Like we chanted quit India against the British we should raise our voice and fight against social evils like inequality, poverty and caste system. Till today, what we have achieved is due to firm belief in unity and diversity. But still we are suffering from inequality, illiteracy, ignorance and other things. Today, caste is restraining us from nation building. Some troublesome forces have taken to violence by wielding guns.  Education is the only solution for all social evils and it is the highway for prosperity. The government have been focussing on education for all and it’s in our hands to get benefit of it.

“The freedom struggle that was started with the 1857 revolution was significant and eventually it turned into a non-violent and satyagraha movement. Many people have sacrificed their lives and contributed their lives for the freedom. Protecting it is everybody’s responsibility,” he added.

“Economic development should go hand in hand with social development. The nation can be described only when all citizens are self sufficient and self reliant, Women and children should be empowered,” he said.

The event was followed by cultural programmes from schoolchildren and more than 1400 children from Andalus English School, St Mathias Higher Primary School and other government school students.
