After playing host to the 103rd Indian Science Congress (ISC) and organising a lecture series from Nobel Laureates as part of its centenary celebrations, the University of Mysore (UoM) is all set to organise the 40th session of Indian Social Science Congress (ISSC) in December.This would be the second time that the varsity is playing host to ISSC, first time being in the mid ‘80s. The university has teamed up with Indian Academy of Social Sciences (ISSA) to hold the sessions between December 19 and 23. The five-day meet will focus on health and quality of life in India.
The ISSC will have subject experts discussing various issues including deliberations on people’s health and quality of life in democratic republic of India with a view to assess the impact of post-Independence development and the problems arising thereof, so as to discover solutions, said Chairman of the Department of Studies in Political Science, UoM, Prof Muzzafar Assadi who is also the local organising secretary for the event.The meet will have international symposia on ‘Science and the world today’ and ‘People’s health and quality of life in Afro-Asian, Latin American, European and American countries’. “This is to highlight connections between science and the world and to carve out a new path for science-led world which is aimed to be hunger-, disease-, pollution-, violence-free and ecologically sustainable,” Assadi added.
Workshops will also be conducted on ‘Science of food and science of health’, ‘Karnataka and its people today’ and ‘Evolving new approach to energy for sustainable development’. In all, 28 disciplines, including agricultural science, anthropology, biotechnology, commerce, communication and journalism, computer science, economics, linguistics, philosophy, political science, sociology etc., will be discussed.The organising committee has invited scientists engaged in interdisciplinary researches to submit their papers on or before August 15 on topics conflicts, war, peace and social security, democracy and human rights, ecological and environmental protection movements, global warming and climate change, history and philosophy of science, IT, mass media and culture, Dalits, tribals, women and peasants struggles and movements for equitable democratic society.
