Mysuru, April 1:- IEEE student branch GSSSIETW, Mysuru and IEEE WIE Affinity Group, GSSSIETW, celebrated International Women’s Day in association with IEEE Bangalore section.
The theme of the celebrations was ‘Balance for Better.’
Dr Poornima Priyadarshini C G, scientist, Department of Molecular Nutrition, CSIR-CFTRI, Mysuru, was the chief guest and Rajamma, hospital staff, Nanjangud, was the guest of honour.
Dr Shiva Kumar M, principal, GSSSIETW, Dr Parameshachari BD, IEEE student branch counsellor, GSSSIETW, IEEE staff coordinators and students were present.
Dr Poornima Priyadarshini who has 17-years of experience in various fields of protein chemistry, cell biology and molecular biology and a post-doctoral fellowship from Heinrich-Pette-Institute, Hamburg, was part of the coordinated research programme on ‘Combating drug resistance in chronic myeloid leukaemia and HIV-1 infection’ funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Germany.
She addressed the students about the contribution of women in the field of science and technology and also motivated the students by highlighting the achievements of women Nobel laureates namely Anna Mani, Indian physicist; Janaki Ammal, Indian botanist; Marie Curie, French-Polish physicist; Gerty Theresa Cori, Austrian-American biochemist and Barbara McClintock, American scientist.
Rajamma, who has 13-years of experience in Post-mortem Department and the only woman from Karnataka who handles procedures after post-mortem, was commended for her contribution towards the society. She addressed the students about the achievements of women in the fields of medicine and also explained on how to overcome the obstacles and challenges in order to achieve the goals.
Dr Shiva Kumar addressed the students about the importance of women in a family and opined that a family is incomplete without a woman.
He also congratulated GSSSIETW for empowering women and encouraging women to be self-reliant, economically independent, have positive self-esteem, generate confidence to face any difficulty and become successful through their hard work, determination and dedication. (MR)
