Prime Sports, National (Abu Dhabi), September 7:- The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday announced the schedule for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 which will be played in the UAE from September 19 to November 10. Last year’s finalists, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, as reported by India Today, will play the tournament opener on September 19.
It was a long wait for the fixtures as the teams had arrived in the UAE last month but the BCCI finalised the dates after working out logistics and quarantine rules in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic across all 3 host cities — Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.
While the tournament gets underway on Saturday in Abu Dhabi, the final will be played on a weekday for the first time in its 13-year history. IPL 2020 missed the April-May window due to the pandemic but the BCCI managed to find another window in September-November after the postponement of the T20 World Cup.
There are only 10 double-headers in IPL 2020 and the evening matches will start at 7:30 pm IST, instead of 8 pm IST which was the norm in the past.
Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore will open their campaign against Sunrisers Hyderabad on September 21, while former champions Kolkata Knight Riders will get their campaign underway against Mumbai Indians on September 23.
IPL 2020 will be played in bio-bubble environments across all the 3 host cities. Players completed a mandatory 6-day quarantine period during which they were tested for Covid-19 thrice. Upon clearing the test, the teams started training from last week while CSK began training only on Friday after 13 members tested positive for the virus. (MR, Inputs: Agencies).
